The Texas Board of Criminal Justice selected Bobby Lumpkin as executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice on August 19, 2025. He assumed the position on September 1 after Bryan Collier retired on August 31.
Lumpkin previously served as TDCJ’s chief of operations and brought nearly 35 years of criminal-justice experience to the position. As executive director, he is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the agency, including the state prison system, parole supervision and state oversight and funding of adult probation departments.
The appointment came after the board conducted a nationwide search. TDCJ’s announcement described Lumpkin’s priorities as public safety, agency operations and rehabilitation.
