A viewer tip prompted KSAT to question an apparent error in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s online records for a Bexar County man serving a 50-year sentence for shooting a San Antonio police officer.

KSAT first reported on July 31, 2026, that the inmate’s projected-release information appeared inconsistent with the sentence imposed in the case. TDCJ subsequently reviewed the record, and KSAT reported that the online information was corrected.

The incident highlights the importance of accurate public records in the state prison system. Projected-release information can affect victims, families, attorneys and members of the public who rely on TDCJ’s website for current case information.

TDCJ has faced broader criticism over outdated, paper-heavy recordkeeping. A 2024 Texas Sunset Advisory Commission staff report found that manual data entry and disconnected databases had contributed to serious errors, including wrongful releases.

Because projected-release dates may change based on sentence calculations, credits, parole decisions or corrected court information, families should verify important questions directly with TDCJ rather than relying solely on a single online entry.
