BEAUMONT, Texas — A 62-year-old man incarcerated at the Stiles Unit died after suffering respiratory distress, and TDCJ ordered an autopsy to determine the cause.
Robert Gonzalez began experiencing breathing problems on March 9, 2026, according to reporting based on agency information. He was transported to a hospital, where his condition worsened overnight. A physician pronounced him dead on March 10.
Officials said the death appeared to be from natural causes, but that description is preliminary. An autopsy was ordered, and the final cause and manner of death should come from the medical examiner.
Why independent review matters
Every death in custody deserves a complete record. Families and the public need to know when symptoms began, how quickly medical staff responded, what treatment was provided and whether the person had previously requested care for the same condition.
TDCJ policy requires notification and review after an incarcerated person dies. Autopsy findings can take weeks or months, especially when toxicology or microscopic testing is required.
Gonzalez had been in TDCJ custody since 2007 following convictions for aggravated sexual assault of a child. His criminal record does not reduce the state’s duty to provide constitutionally adequate medical care while he was confined.
