The Cherokee County Jail is run by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office in Rusk. It is a small facility, and the same building houses the Sheriff’s Office. For anything not covered here, the jail can be reached directly at the number below.

Find Someone in Cherokee County Jail

Cherokee County does not run its own online roster. To check whether someone is in custody, use VINELink, the statewide victim-information and custody-status service.

How to search

On VINELink, choose Texas, then search by the person’s name. You can also register there for a free alert if their custody status changes. If the person was booked very recently or does not appear, call the jail at (903) 683-6365.

A name and date of birth are all you need to look someone up. You should not have to enter a Social Security number or other sensitive personal information.

What you may need

• The person’s full legal name (try spelling variations and any former or maiden name).
• Their date of birth.
• Their inmate ID / booking number — the jail assigns this. You will need it for mail and for commissary deposits; get it from the jail if you do not have it.

Booking information and charges

For charges, bond amounts, and court information, call the jail at (903) 683-6365 or the Sheriff’s Office at (903) 683-2271 during office hours. An arrest is not a conviction.

Visitation Information

Cherokee County offers on-site visits at the jail and, through its provider NCIC, video visits you can join from home. You must be on the person’s approved visitor list and schedule in advance by calling (903) 683-6365.

On-site visits — days and hours

As posted by public jail directories (confirm current times with the jail):

• Men: Tuesdays 7:30–9:00 p.m. and Saturdays 3:00–5:00 p.m.
• Women: Tuesdays 6:00–7:30 p.m. and Saturdays 1:00–3:00 p.m.

Visits run about 30 minutes, one to two per week, with up to two guests. Bring a valid government photo ID; a minor must be with an authorized adult. Leave phones and bags in your vehicle. Free on-site video terminals are also available on weekdays.

Video visits from home

Remote video visits run through NCIC and can be scheduled for most of the day. Create an account with NCIC, add the person as a contact, and book a visit. Remote visits usually carry a per-visit fee — check the current rate in your NCIC account.

Commissary and Money Deposits

Money for commissary goes into the person’s jail account. Cherokee County uses JailATM.

What you must provide

The person’s full name and their inmate ID / booking number.

Deposit fees are set by the provider and shown before you pay. The Sheriff’s Office will never ask for payment by phone or gift card — treat any such demand as a scam.

Telephone Calls and Communication

Inmate telephone service and video visits at the Cherokee County Jail run through NCIC. People in the jail can make outgoing calls but cannot receive calls, so you set up an account to receive theirs.

Set up an account

1. Register with NCIC online, or by phone at (800) 943-2189.
2. Choose Texas, then Cherokee County Jail, then select the incarcerated person.
3. Enter the phone number they will call, and add funds ($10–$100 at a time).

Calls are recorded and monitored except calls with an attorney. Rates and fees are set by the provider and can change — check current pricing before adding a large balance.

Put your own full name and return address in the top-left corner of every envelope or postcard. Mail without a complete return address may be refused.

What to expect

Small county jails typically limit incoming mail to letters, postcards, and a small number of photos, and often require books to be shipped directly from a publisher or bookstore. Do not send cash, stamps, or anything with staples, glue, stickers, or other contraband. Because Cherokee County does not publish a detailed mail policy online, call the jail at (903) 683-6365 before sending photos, books, or anything unusual.

Do not put cash in a letter. Money orders should follow the rules in Section 4. Legal mail from an attorney is handled separately — ask the jail for its current procedure.
