BEAUMONT, Texas — An inmate serving time at the Stiles Unit has died in custody, according to an in-custody death report filed with the Texas Attorney General’s Office.
Lawrence James Napper, 68, was a registered sex offender serving time for aggravated sexual assault of a child and aggravated kidnapping, according to the report. Napper was found in his bunk on Aug. 20, 2026, in what appeared to be cardiac distress, 12News reported.
He was transported to a hospital outside the prison system, where his condition continued to decline over the following days. His family ultimately made the decision to stop life-sustaining treatment, after which he was pronounced deceased. His cause of death remains pending an autopsy.
