MARSHALL, Texas — The Texas Rangers are investigating the death of a 62-year-old man who died Oct. 23 after being taken from the Harrison County Jail to a hospital, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office said.

Anthony Glenn Morgan of Marshall died at 12:29 p.m. that Friday, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He had been in the jail since that Wednesday, held on a parole violation and a charge of possession of less than 1 gram of a controlled substance, the Marshall News Messenger reported.

The Sheriff’s Office has not said what happened before Morgan was taken to the hospital or which hospital treated him. His cause of death is pending.

State investigation

Texas law requires an outside agency to investigate every death in a county jail. The Rangers are conducting that independent review. “The investigation remains ongoing, and no further information will be released at this time,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

A death in custody does not by itself mean anyone did something wrong. The investigation and the medical examiner’s findings are meant to establish how and why it happened.

Second death at the jail this year

Morgan’s is at least the second in-custody death at the Harrison County Jail in 2026. In February, Lawrence Richard Siford, 63, died at a hospital after jail staff found him in medical distress around 1 a.m. on Feb. 18. The Sheriff’s Office said Siford had chronic medical conditions and that no foul play was suspected. The Rangers investigated that death as well.

Harrison County runs two jails in Marshall: the Main Jail beside the county courthouse and the Travis Street Annex. Families can find contact information, the inmate search, and mail and visitation rules on the Harrison County Jail Information Page.

Texas Prison News will update this story when Morgan’s cause of death is released.
