The Bridgeport Unit in Wise County was evacuated on June 3, 2026, after officials detected high carbon monoxide levels and investigated a possible gas leak.
TDCJ told CBS News Texas that the initial call was received at approximately 9 a.m. Everyone inside the facility, including incarcerated people and employees, was evacuated. Officials reported no injuries.
Bridgeport police said readings of 500 to 600 parts per million were traced to the prison’s boiler room. Police reported that all incarcerated people and staff were accounted for and safe, while local law-enforcement agencies and fire departments responded.
TDCJ said incarcerated people were being transported to nearby facilities while repairs were completed. The Bridgeport Unit can house up to 520 men in lower TDCJ custody classifications, according to agency information cited by CBS.
Families seeking information during a unit evacuation should rely on confirmed TDCJ notices and direct unit communications, because temporary placements and operational conditions can change during repairs.
